320.You hurry towards the corner of the street, pushing your way through the lively Babylonian crowd. What luck, and what a saving of precious time! The old man seemed to know Barsip very well, and perhaps you could have asked him for more precise details... But it doesn't matter, because you'll be facing him in a moment.
Finally, you see the garden he pointed out to you: you quickly walk the few metres that separate you from the vast space where flowers grow luxuriantly. It is probably a place where the sage comes to seek the quiet necessary for his reflections.
In front of you are some women accompanied by a crowd of rowdy children. One of the children is particularly exasperating: he is playing with a slingshot and pretending to aim at you. You frown and stare at him reproachfully, but the child, stung to the quick, throws a sharp stone right in your face! The projectile hits your left eyebrow and causes you to lose 1 Life point. You are eager to teach this impertinent child a lesson, but you restrain yourself and walk away towards the centre of the garden, rubbing your sore eye.
You soon notice that all the paths in this park are lined with cages housing multicoloured birds, peacocks spreading their beautiful tails, and even a magnificent tiger that has come here from India. It is clearly a zoological and botanical garden, created for the enjoyment of young and old alike, but where is Barsip? At the end of the avenue, a group of people gathered around a cage seem to be having a great time. You approach them: even if the sage is not there, one of them may be able to give you some information. Go to 388.
388.When you reach the group of visitors, you finally manage to make out the object of their curiosity. The large cage contains a surprising quadruped: it is a sloth, an animal from the mythical islands beyond the Pillars of Hercules. You didn't know that the Babylonians ventured so far, unless it is a gift from the ruler of Atlantis... The children laugh as they look at the animal's funny face. It is undoubtedly the main attraction of this garden. But... what did you say? A... sloth? You feel as if you've been hit over the head with a hammer: when you arrived, the old man, who was half deaf, was showing a passer-by the way to the zoo, and more precisely the location of the sloth's cage! That senile old man thought you were looking for the same thing! He understood sloth instead of Barsip. You feel like tearing your hair out!
Furious and disappointed, you turn back, dodging a few children who run across your path, and return to the crowded street lined with game stalls, determined to explore them all! Go to 240.
240.Among the most popular shacks, you spot three where betting is very popular. The men crowding them are dressed in a thousand different ways: long dark wool cloaks, typical of nomadic tribes, leather armour strapped to their hips, white or pastel tunics, brightly coloured clothes. Fragments of the most diverse languages reach you at times, including strange dialects from the mountains of Kurdistan or the villages of Kish. Everyone present has the same concern: to get rich and have fun. Zigzagging between the players, do you inspect a shack where a kind of race is taking place (go to 117), a stand where skittles players are insulting the owner (go to 239) or an archery target (go to 369)?
117.You get closer and discover that it is a race played on a small scale: the punters are all bent over a large wooden table carved like a maze. Large grains of sugar dot a track, on which a voracious beetle with shiny wings moves from grain to grain; but behind this first insect is a praying mantis with deadly jaws trying to catch up with it. The mechanics of the game seem rather simple: players who bet on the beetle hope that it will manage to get out of the maze after devouring all the sugar grains. Those who bet on the praying mantis, on the other hand, are counting on the speed of the latter, which must manage to devour the beetle before it reaches the exit, which is too narrow for it. Do you want to question one of the players to see if they know Barsip (go to 376), ask the same question to the owner of the gaming table (go to 143), or try to earn some gold by betting and postpone the questions until the end of the game (go to 455)?
